Whether you are visiting Charleston on vacation or a local looking for a fun staycation, it’s not always easy to find entertainment for everyone. We’re not mind readers (yet), but we’re willing to bet that the first thing that comes to your mind when you think “fun for the whole family” in Charleston is the beach, but did you know that Charleston’s charm goes far beyond the beachfront?
Trust us, we love the waves, but if you’re looking for a change of pace (and a smaller crowd with less parking), there are plenty of other family-friendly options in Charleston.
The following was written by Mocha Johnson, a Charleston local. A friend of his celebrated his birthday with us last summer, and he wrote about it on his blog. Glad you had fun, Mocha!
"Anyone who get to know me for longer than about three minutes knows that I am always game for a good party. Pool party cookout? Let’s do it. Bonfire at the beach? Yes, please. Crash a bachelorette party and dance in a club while wearing their tiaras? Duh. I love mixing it up with friends and strangers in combined effort to embarrass ourselves and/or just have some good bonding time while escaping the routine of the week. “You don’t stop playing because you get old. You get old because you stop playing.” I live by this motto. True, it might not have worked out for Lindsey Lohan so well, but I’ll take my chances. If you get to know me a little longer, you’ll also quickly learn that I am somewhat of a thrill seeker. I’d rather jump first and consider the consequences later. I’ve raced cars and bikes, love hang gliding, and have never once gotten queasy on a roller coaster. Hey, I never claimed to be intelligent.
When you are looking to try out flyboarding, there are some helpful tips everyone should follow to ensure a safe, fun and exciting adventure on water unlike any other.
- Leave it to the experts. Whatever your guide is telling you during training, follow it! Pay close attention to everything he says and don’t deviate from it in any way.
Flyboarding is an exciting extreme water sport that will literally take you to new heights. Attach it to your personal watercraft, hop on and the water will be propelled beneath your feet on the device. It is essentially a hoverboard you can use on water!
You can go up to 49 feet in the air on a flyboard or take a dive beneath the water’s surface 8 feet down. It is fairly new, having been invented in only 2012, and is a truly one-of-a-kind experience. For the first time, you can really propel out of the water with stability in the air, thanks to this new device.
